hydraulic system. With fluid in the reservoir just run the top up and down a couple of times (helping if necessary). If the bubbles don't clear from the lines then I do suspect that a seal in one of the cylinders may be shot. My thinking is that you would notice a slight 'twist' when the pump starts moving fluid as a 'leaky' seal would hold for a moment and then let the fluid by thus skewing the top to one side ever so slightly - just thinking out loud about the logic of the hydraulics as the lines do "Y" thus the fluid would go to the 'bad' cylinder.
I got lucky, I didn't like the idea of pay big bucks for new struts or motor/pump. When I finished repairing the brushes on the bench all I did was put everything back in the car, tighten the connections, fill the reservoir, pull up the handbrake and press the switch, when the top moved my smile was a mile wide, when it kept on moving up and down I thanked all and sundry and put the car to bed for the winter and there were no bubbles left in the lines. Next week (we still have some snow on the ground) I take the car out (I hope I take it out as I broke the plastic/ceramic on one of the coil posts so I'm not sure it will start and I won't buy a new coil unless this one really doesn't work - see note about big bucks above, new coil = $C128) and I really am apprehensive about the top still working!!! Once bitten twice shy I guess. Good luck with finding your solution keep us posted.
