I think it's OK as long as RPMs come back to normal>>>

Chris,
I have the same problem on my '84, except that on mine, the RPMs don't always come back to normal when I stop w/AC on. It's normal for the RPMs to dip MOMENTARILY when the a/c is on and engine speed is coming down to idle. If RPMs dip down, but take several seconds to come back up, read on:

The engine speed SHOULD pop back up to normal quickly when the a/c idle-up valve is activated (8V models) or when the computer tells the AIC valve to increase idle speed to compensate for the load of the a/c compressor (16V models). If yours is a 16V, you may have a sluggish or sticking AIC valve--remove hoses, shoot some carb cleaner in it, and put it hoses back on. If it's an 8V, then check for good, corrosion free connections at the 2 wires (red and black) which plug onto the valve. It's in the hose gang between the throttle body and the auxilliary air valve.

The idle-up compensation (both 8V & 16V) is switched on when your throttle completely closes--a.k.a. idle--and the a/c is on. However, the switches used on 8V & 16V differ slightly. Make sure the throttle stop screw is clean (8V) and making no resistance with its contact, which is the single wire on the driver's side of the throttle body (8V only). Or, if you have a 16V engine, make sure the throttle position switch clicks just before it closes and you get continuity at the connector(LH 2.4 and maybe 2.2 cars, checked with engine off).

I thought I had the a/c idle-dip on my '84 S licked when I hit upon the idea of taking off the fragile black plastic terminal covers on my a/c idle-up valve wires, to pinch the female spade lug ends to make a tighter connection.

I hope this helps!
