I belived I was starting to have a cooling problem with my 85 900 NA. On the road, moving in traffic no problem....little less than half temp scale. Had changed out the water pump no too long ago...I install a new T-Stat every two years, etc. But put the car into traffic or heavy stop and go..and boom...up to 3/4 + indication...and of course fan came on then and it would recover very, very slowly.
Pulled the radiator out completely and backflushed...backflush flow rate looked good but visual inspection of tube ends (through what openings you could see) indicated some amount of deposits after 180K original miles.
For approx $129 for a replacement radiator..I couldn't find a good reason for not changing it out completely...also switched to the MB/Chrysler coolant (orange color, 100K mile stuff or 5 year stuff). Well its 91 degrees out and I am just below 1/2 temp scale in heavy traffic. The fan comes on only rarely now...not as soon as I hit stop and go. I am beginning to wonder if some of the top passages of the radiator get partially clogged compared to the bottom passages...and the t-stat switch is at the top...then the t-stat switch is closing late (a bit cooler) compared to the outlet temp of the coolant going back to the
engine. I.E. the fans coming on at a higher real engine temperature.
Anyway with the radiator change I am completely happy...seems to have more than enough coolant going through the radiator at idle and hot weather....
Eliminating that little bit of path resistance through the radiator really helped...
