Tightening Drivebelts

I got a Haynes repair manual for my 88 900T, and noticed it was quite vague on instructions as to how I can tighten my slightly loose drivebelt. As far as the manual goes...it says simply that the bolt on the tensioner is used to tighten the belts. Is it as simple as that? Simply turn the bolt and the tensioning bar will tighten the belts? Seems a little simplistic to me. So before I try it, maybe someone with a little more experience can advise. To tighten the belt, should I turn the bolt clockwise or counterclockwise? (assuming I'm interpreting the manual correctly. Thanks...
