Altenator voltage at B and D terminals ???

Does it matter where I apply the probe at those terminals: stud, nut, connector or wire?
I can't recall which terminal now, but with the motor running one of them was giving me TRIPLE DIGIT readings on my DMM (I'm a novice) and the other I think was giving 12-13 volts. I stuck one proble wherever I could find on the terminal and the other on the engine pull bracket.
With the motor off I could not confirm continuity on the wire from the B terminal on the Alt to the where it grounds on the motor.
I thought perhaps I was doing this improperly.
