Last time I changed ball joints, I used a pair of sockets from the socket set that were the same height, and put one on either side of the upper control arm. I placed them standing up, because I certainly did not want them to become projectiles as they became loaded.
The first (and hopefully last) shop I had my Saab at used a 1 inch square metal tube - I know because he left it in by mistake, and it came flying out about 1/4 mile from the shop.
