Engine Temp ?

Recently my 93 900S seems to be running hotter than usual. For as long as I can remember it has always run at right about ½ way on the temp gauge. Now it will go up to about ¾ but never above. This generally happens when I am driving on open freeways and keeping the car at approx. 3000 rpms and the exterior temp is 80+. The temp doesn’t seem to be elevated when I am just driving around town. I have also noticed that my aux. fan no longer runs when I turn the car off. However, when I turn the AC on both fans still come on and the engine temp doesn’t seem to be elevated. In fact I have noticed that if the engine temp gets high and then I turn the AC on the temp gauge actually goes down to just about ½ way. My guess is that the switch that is supposed to turn the fan on is broken and that the fan doesn’t go on unless I turn the AC on. But should I need the fan when I am going 70mph on the freeway? Do these signs point to a broken switch/relay or to a more serious problem? Also, I don’t know if this related but I have to top off my coolant every 4-6 months. Most people I have talked to have said that this isn’t a significant amount to worry about but I thought I would mention that too.
Thanks,
-Dirk
