Converting from R-12 makes sense since it has become so expensive. If you have a major leak, are replacing parts, etc. this is the time to do an R134a conversion. It is important to change oil as the oils are not compatible. This requires a flush of the system.

I developed a slow leak about 2 years ago that requires a charge 2 times a year. (Two different shops have been unable to pinpoint the leak.) Last year I decided to try a product called Duracool. It is compatible with R-12 oil, so I was able to charge the system without doing any other work.

Important thing to know: This product is NOT EPA approved for shops to use since it is a hydrocarbon, very similar to propane. (Yes, the same stuff in the gas grill...) Although you can legally use it, A/C shops cannot. Your state may or may not have rules regarding it's use. For the environmentally sensitive, it is less toxic to the environment than R-12, R134a, etc.

The concern about Duracool is flammability, however, the product is used in other countries without problems (i.e. no reports of cars blowing up). Some people have issues about using a propane-like product. However, keep in mind you are carrying up to 18 gallons (compared to a couple ounces of refrigerant) of a flammable hydrocarbon (gasoline) with you at all times.

I am very happy with it. It cools well (vent temps of about 40 F), much less expensive than R-12, etc.

Last, there are other alternative refrigerants available that others may have familiarity with.
