Have your cake and eat it too! Buy the Audi, and store it until one of two things happens: 1) The Saab croaks, or 2) it's a blizzard and you want to go out and have some real fun (you *do* live where it snows, right?).
Here's a few more random points:
1) If I were you, I wouldn't worry so much about that transmission. They're a little wimpy for a turbo motor, but on a non-turbo 900 reliability is pretty good (can't say the same for a 9000).
2) Audis have issues, too. I used to fix them for a living, and at the shop the joke was that "Audi" was the German word for "electrical trouble". Differential-lock actuators, rear rotors and calipers, power door locks, and door and trunklid wiring are other trouble spots.
3) Having said that, many folks think the mid/late 80's 4000 Quattros were some of the best cars Audi ever made. If you go to a dealer, you'll still find some of the mechanics driving them. For some reason the Quattros always seemed a lot more reliable than the non-Quattros, and the ones reom that era aren't stupidly expensive to maintain like the newer models.
I used to live in Massachusetts and moved to Florida last August. Brought my '86 9000 turbo, and my '87 4000 Quattro with me (and an '85 4000Q parts car). The 9000 has since been replaced with a '97 Aero, but I'm keeping the Audi. Don't drive it here since I can no longer afford to have 2 cars registered, but when I move back north I want it for the winter!
