'89 9000S (but basically the same system as the 900) - Needed a new compressor anyway. Flushed it with a garden sprayer and a compressor. Plus I replaced the dryer, expansion valve and the low side hose to the condensor. Replaced the o-rings at the spots where I had to, but didn't loosen anything I didn't have to. Had a shop evacuate it (and reseat one connection that was leaking), added the R-134a with my own gauges and it cools to 48-50 degrees very nicely. It was 88 here in Minneapolis today and I was very cool driving home. I'm very happy with it.
Overall, I think it takes a little longer to get really chilly than the R-12 did, but that's about the only difference. I did a lot more than the conversion kits you find at Walmart and I think that's the trick to a clean conversion. Do it once, do it right. TW at thesaabsite.com gave me good advice as to what was necessary and what wasn't. I also got good tips on the 9000 BB.
