Agree with you about rebuilt axles - they have a *really* bad reputation. I used to work at a repair shop, the owner of the shop had a friend who owned an axle-rebuilding company. The rebuilding-company guy said he'd never use his product on his own car!

Replacement of the drivers is pretty much "on condition". If you're getting the usual symptoms (vibration when accelerating, particularly in 2nd and 3rd gear), they're probably worn. Otherwise, the real way to tell is to take them apart and examine them. If you run your finger along the inside contact surface, it will be real obvious if they're worn - the surface will not be smooth.

Good news is there's a trick for this problem - swap them from side to side! Since most folks spend 99% of their time driving forward, only 3 of the 6 contact surfaces tend to wear. Switching the left and right drivers moves the force to the other surfaces, and gives the drivers a new life.

BTW you may be aware of this, but where the drivers mount to the transmission, there are shims on each side. It is VERY important to note where the shims are, and replace them on the side they came from.
