Do you have a vibration under load? If all you are going by is the amount of rotation at the wheel before the tripod loads the driver firmly then you may be getting misled. There is always a significant "slop" at the wheel even when everything is new. I've never seen a tripod fail even when the inner driver was a mess though some have reported seeing this.
