(Note: I searched the archives and the web but couldn't find this specific problem.)
I just got my new (to me) '92 900T home. Now my '88 SPG has a playmate!
Before driving off with it I didn't notice that the seatback tilt button was broken off. The fore-aft and seat base up/down all work. At a rest stop during my 7 hour drive home I discovered that I could get the seatback to go further back by sticking something in the hole where the switch used to be but I couldn't get it to tilt forward.
I took the switch apart today and it seems that someone had been in there before. The cover and tabs were a bit beat up indicating previous fiddling and the contacts for the forward tilt slider were missing. For the fun of it I jumped two of the contacts, got a spark and promptly blew the fuse. (I don't know if I jumped them properly -- I touched two points from different contacts. I was going to try additional combinations but, well, I'd hate to blow up the new car on its first day.)
I put the backward tilt contacts into the forward tilt location, put the switch back together, powered it up and the fuse blew again. (I don't know if it blew once I turned the key on or after I moved some of the switches.)
I also realized that the problem must have existed previously since there was a 25a fuse where a 30a should have been (could have been a factory problem but I doubt it). It seems logical that the forward tilt contacts were removed and the switch broken off to prevent the fuse from blowing.
It seems odd that the seatback can be tilted back without blowing the fuse but tilting it forward blows the fuse. I can't decide if this indicates a faulty switch or something in the motor/mechanism.
Questions:
- Any thoughts on where the problem may be? My Bently manual has no details on the power seats.
- How much might a switch cost? It didn't look *too* terrible to change, although the wiring harness splits off into many directions.
- Can the seatback be moved manually? This would be fine by me if I could move it into a good position and leave it there.
- Should I head over to the 9000 bulletin board since it's the same (I think)?
Thanks,
