Put in one from an '88 and your car will run, but:
- Your A/C will not come on, nor will the cooling fan which is activated by the A/C switch.
- Your shift up light will magically stop annoying you.
You can see from Bentley wiring diagrams that '88 and '89 have differences in these two systems only. Bentley wiring diagrams show no such difference between '89 and '89, both also with LH 2.4.
'89 ECUs are hard to come by, and by my pricing will cost you roughly twice as much as an '88 or '90. Used ones also have the distinct possibility (probability?) of crapping out on you the same way your original one did. To alleviate this, you have the option of buying a factory rebuilt one which supposedly fixes the problem. That will cost you even more, let's say more on the order of 3x a used '88 or '90.
So, basically, your options are:
(1) Take a gamble with a '90
(2) Take a different gamble with an '89
(3) Accept no A/C and shift up light with an '88
(4) Fork out the loot for a rebuilt '89
I personally chose option (1). I'll let you know in a couple days how it works out.
