I well remember the frustration after having replaced the master cylinder seals, then finding no way to purge the air from within - despite a full reservoir and repeated pumping of the clutch pedal. That's when I decided to do a reverse gravity bleed from the slave nipple. When I did my version of it, I removed as much fluid from the reservoir as possible so I could tell if fluid was making it's way up through the system. With the funnel/hose connected and suspended above the reservoir level (the higher the better) and the slave nipple opened, I could see that fluid was indeed sinking down, but at a very slow rate. So then I came up with the idea to insert another smaller sized flexible tube snugly into the funnel attached fluid filled tubing. Then I simply applied pressure by blowing into that hose and watched the fluid descend at a much greater rate. I could then see fluid rising into the reservoir, which told me that the air within the master cylinder had been replaced by fluid. If memory serves, it was at that point when I was able to apply pressure to the clutch pedal.
I still don't understand exactly how that works considering that it's the clutch MC's job to be sure that the seals will hold against back pressure of fluid, or else you wouldn't get pressure at all to operate the clutch. I'll guess that once the system is purged of air and the entire clutch system is cycled under pressure conditions, that a constant state of fluid pressure exists against the various seals, permanently pressing them tight against their internal cylinder surfaces - unlike the weak pressure from my lungs, which enabled fluid to easily flow around the "limp" rubber seals.
If you suspect remaining air within the slave cylinder, once you get pressure within the MC, you'll then be able to bleed the slave normally.
