I had an 85 8V that began making an insideous pinion gear whine and lasted about another 30,000 before one day it would no longer go into fifth gear. My mechanic recommended a rebuild if the tranny wasn't to shot for approx $1500.00. However, when I took it in, he fealt the tranny was too far gone to rebuild and recommended replacement for approx $2000.00. Cost would have been higher if clutch/etc needed repair. The dealer was comparable on prices. If I were to go through it again, I would get it in to do the rebuild asap to save some expenses. I ended up selling the 85 and buying an 85 SPG for cheaper than the replacement trans would have costed.
