A/C convertion from R12 to R134

My 1989 Saab 900T has a leak in the hose that comes out of the A/C compressor. In the shop they charge more than $500 for replacing that hose and converting the A/C from R12 to R134. I read in saabnet that doing the convertion is not that difficult, so I purchased the hose, the receiver, the valve(s), and the Haynes repair manual. One of the things I read in saabnet was that I am supposed to "purge" the system. However the manual does not describe how to do this. Can any of you, kinder saab spirits shed light into:
1. How to purge the A/C? Given the leak I assume that there is little or no gas in the system.
2. How can I do an internal cleaning (is that what they talk about when they say purge?)
3. What tools would I need to do the conversion (I saw one kit in AutoShack for $35). I have elementary tools. Is that all I need?
4. The kit from AutoShack mentions something about oil. Is this "refrigerant oil"? How this oil comes into the picture?
4. The Haynes manual mentions certain tensions in the hoses. How critical it is to have the hoses at those tensions? if I just put the hoses in with o-rings, and tie them until I feel they are sufficientlu tied, would that be enough?
5. I have two left hands in a right handed body if you know what I mean.
Any tips will be greatly appreciated.
Juan
