A couple of days after I posted the original question the Check Engine Light (CEL) came on - "damn" I said as this has also been a recurring problem usually related to fuel delivery/vacuum lines and had been addressed by another Audi indie mechanic with no permanent fix and at a cost of many dollars. Anyway, this morning I took the A4 into the mechanic who had fixed the suspension after which the ABS activated every time when braking, starting at about 20kph and ending at about 17kph. When I mentioned the CEL coming on his eyes lit up and he got his TechII reader and the code came back indicated that one of the ABS sensors had a different reading than the other 3. The allowable range of resistance, on the spec sheet is quite large he said, but in practice not that forgiving. Just to be sure, he pulled all 4 wheels, loosened the hub nut on each, pushed, using the loosened hub nut, the axel a bit out the back of the carrier, that way he could see the actuator (toothed gear) that sends the signal and that he thought might be cracked on at least one making a larger gap - all 4 were OK. He then measured the resistance in each of the harnesses to the front ABS sensors. One was off a bit compared to the other. He pulled the left front and found some metal particles sticking to the magnet. He cleaned it and put some sort of grease on it and put it back in place. He tried to loosen the right front sensor but it was firmly in place. He took the car for a drive, no ABS problem, I put 150 kilometers on the car today, no ABS problem and the CEL has stayed off. The moral of the story, the obvious isn't always the answer. I hope this explanation might help somebody with an ABS problem. Thanks to those who provided suggested fixes. BTW, the mechanic worked on the car for over an hour and there was no charge as he said, "I might have jiggled the wires of the sensors while changing the suspension arms." - he made my day!!
