I am discounting air because you did not disconnect the old slave. Since you were able to get the wire/spacer out of the pressure plate on the new clutch, I am assuming that the slave was able to depress the fingers enough. It is easy to overextend the the slave and jam it if you do not extend it just enough to get the spacer. Perhaps the slave piston went back in cockeyed and jammed in the sleeve. The only thing I don't like about this idea is that I would expect the slave to be jammed in a disengaged position. here's another long shot...the clutch master somehow tore a seal in the process, so you're just churning fluid in the master when you try to disengage the clutch.
The only other thing I can imagine is that you forgot to put back the throwout bearing and did not put a finger spacer in the new clutch. If that were the case, you could slide the assembly back in easily because you left out the bearing, and without a bearing, the slave piston would just extend without hitting anything. Time for a do-over with new slave and don't forget the throwout.
