Wet Pass Floor. Found the leak. How to fix?

Hi Saabers,
The car is a 1985 Saab 900T. I had the infamous wet passenger floor. After much research in the archives, I was able to track down the leak. It was coming from the fresh air box. The drain is clean and the box is clear of any debris. This to head off the typical things to check.
Unlike others who had the same leak, mine is coming from the box-to-firewall joint. The recommended fix that came close was to silicone the gasket.
I'm not comfortable with this approach because I would have water collecting in joint and eventually rusting out the metal. A couple of questions:
1. How hard is it to replace the gasket? Mine is dried out and should be replaced, but if there is an easy fix, I'm all ears.
2. Could I remove the a/c evaporator and seal the joint from inside the box?
Thanks in advance,
Eric B
