Convertible top piston repair?

My top mechanism on my '88 convertible got progressively worse - to the point where I had to manually raise it each time by opening the bypass valve in the trunk. I had tried many of the bleeding methods recommended on the BB without success and decided to try the Saab recommended procedure( I bought the Saab factory manual for convertibles). I was low on fluid so it is leaking from somewhere probably the cylinders and slightly at the bypass valve. I have taken my hydraulic system out of my car per Saab manual.
I would like to rebuild the cylinders while it is out. The Saab manual does not detail how to take any of the components apart. I guess they expect you to 'fix' parts by buying new expensive components. Has anyone had success with replacing the seals in the hydraulic cylinder pistons for the top mechanism? How do you get the cylinder apart? Does the top screw off - 'lefty loosey'? Once I get it apart where can I get parts? Any help would be appreciated. I would like to get the system finally working right.
