You cut your old radiator in half with a sawzall? That's pretty bold! I'm thinking this though: even if you did cut where you did (down through the center I'm guessing), perhaps the buildup of sediments were elsewhere. When I pulled the radiator from this 82 for a cleaning two years ago when first bought, it was obvious it hadn't been flushed in a long time if ever. The buildup was obviously along the bottom. I had to poke through a good bit of sludge near the drain to get fluid to pour out. The water flushing that followed produced a lot of stuff. Then I banged it around (mostly dropping it on it's face on a piece of plywood) causing more stuff to dislodge. I ultimately replaced it a year later because it developed a leak. I didn't cut into it to examine anything. Having replaced it with a new one, I now realize it had been running more hot than normal, most likely due to blockage I wasn't able to dislodge. I'll guess most of the blockage develops near the bottom region. Your cooling system was probably well kept, so you may not have seen anything out of the ordinary. Any buildup at all inside there, even if just a layering of oxidation (or it's enclosed container fluid filled equivalent), reduces the cooling efficiency.
