Hey,
I just left mine alone because leak is minor. My compressor is original to my '84S, as far as I know, so it's got 220,000 miles on it. Hey, it sounds a tiny bit scratchy, compared to newer cars, when a/c is on, but it get the job done and cools quite nicely.
If the leak is bad and all the freon escapes (leaving a/c compressor inoperable--the freon low pressure cut-out switch activates under those conditions), then you will definitely need to get that compressor rebuilt or replaced--unless there's another leak!
Hope that helps!
