Had a similar problem with an 87 900. It turned out to be the main drive chain, which connects to the engine to the trans. The chain has a hydraulic tensioner which relies on engine oil which I believe is routed to the area.
The chain tensioner works with a spring and oil. The engine was older (>100 K miles) and was making metal. Metal shavings had collected in the tensioner and prevented it from doing it's job. The symptom was a loud clunking sound when decelerating. It was more prevalent doing quick accel/decel, as opposed to accelerating under load and keeping a constant load then decelerating. IE, more of a problem in stop and go, as opposed to getting off the highway and downshifting.
Solution was to take about the assembly ( in the car, with no help from the manual...) and remove the chain tensioner and cleaning it out. The problem was solved.
...been looking for a chance to pass this on. Good luck.
