Fuel Pressure Regulator problem

When I checked my oil this morning on my 1992 900S convertible, I noticed
a gas smell in the engine compartment. Turned the engine back on, and noticed a steady drip near and from
the fuel pressure regulator. Shut engine off, and checked the vacuum hose into the top of the unit, and found the hose was dried and cracked. Cut off about a 1/4" and placed it back on the FPR connection, and the leak stopped.
But now I'm wondering if this fuel flow is normal, with the vacuum hose removed, or is the fuel pressure regulator faulty (possibly a ruptured diaphragm?), and should I replace it (the FPR)?
Otherwise, the car runs fine, and gas mileage has been 28 to 30 mpg (manual transmission).
