Todd,
Since you reconnected the vacuum line the fuel will be sucked into the place the vacuum supply comes from--the intake manifold. It will richen the air/fuel mixture, and eventually, the leak will progress until the mixture is too rich to run (a fire danger to your catalytic convertor, I'm told). Some have said they smelled a rich gas smell and then removed that vacuum hose to find gasoline spraying out at them when engine running!
The vacuum hose lets the FPR "read" the engine load; high load, such as stomping down on gas pedal, means low vacuum. FPR's diaphagm responds to more or less vacuum and applies more or less fuel pressure to the fuel injector rail. (I'm not exactly whether that vacuum/fuel pressure relationship is proportional or inversely proportional, though.)
Symptoms of bad FPR: Well, I haven't had one happen to Mom's '90 but on this BB I've heard of rough running to eventual no-start condition, depending on how badly the diaphragm has ruptured. The worse off the diaphragm, the richer the air/fuel mixture, the worse the driveability, (and the higher danger of raw fuel reaching the hot catalytic convertor!).
Hope this helps!
