Their thoughts kind of match mine. I "fix" a lot of cars for a lot of people. Mostly Friends and Relatives. I insist I buy the parts, not for a mark up but "quality control". I got, well, shafted several years ago. I do a lot of ring and pinion changes and know what they cost for QUALITY parts. A person I worked with made enough noise ( think of a dog whining) that I agreed to install a set that cost 1/2 of what I would pay. The alarm should have gone off right there! 2 weeks later the ring gear lost 3 teeth and siezed causing $1200 in damage. He said I installed it wrong. After much noise and threatened legal action, I was able to prove the bearing set that he gave me with the 1/2 price parts was not designed to work togeather. Not something you would inspect when installing parts from a good supplier. (my regular R&P supplier helped me solve and prove this)And how was I to know he did not get something mixed up with some other parts he bought somewhere else, cause he(come to find out later) had several failed projects. and if I had bought the parts, I had control over them, and I had a supplier I could go to.Soooo what I guess I'm saying, I will only put a part on that someone brings me IF I get a complete release from any liability or responsability. Yes there are some out there that will mark up a part a lot to make a profit, but that is not the mech I want to hire, I want him to make his profit from his work. Remember also, if they have a part on the shelf you need, they have money tied up (invested) that a reasonable return should be expected on. Do you keep spare plugs and brakes on the shelf in your shop or buy when you need? I have spares, but realize that is money tied up.
