As to the stripper, it can work. the biggest screwup I've seen with it is to leave it on too long, or work to big of area. the paint seems to get harder if stripper is on it and then dries.
After 180 grit, the metal will not be ready for primer, you will need a sandable sealer to fill the scrtches in the metal and then work that smooth with something in the 300-400 range for primer. sandable sealer is really just a very thick primer with a metal treatment in it, but a thin primer is needed over it. The best topcoat seems to come if a non-sandable sealer is used over the final primer and just before the 1st coat of paint, non-sandable sealer needs to be painted within 12 hours of aplication but should hide most color flaws from the primer coats showing up in the paint.
