I live in MA-

The test is stringent and somewhat random.

New cars are not tested the first two years...then approximately every
other year. Altho' my 1990 was tested in both 2001 and 2002. The tech said the computer determines this randomly, based on the VIN #.
But if you're registering a car for the first time in MA, no matter what year, you'll be tested on the dyno.

I've not had problems with my 2 non-turbo 900s passing without any exhaust system mods...
