Help!...wierd noise

My '86 900s (auto tranny) is making a strange sound at cruising speed. Only audible with the radio off (and if you're listening for it), the sound occurs between 2000 and 3500 rpm. (maybe higher). It is a low hum, and it constantly changes.

It goes: w-u-w-u-w-u-w-u-w-u.

This occurs regardless of what gear I'm in. The frequency of the sound is 1 (w-u) per second. It slightly goes up with my rpm's, but not much. I've ruled out the wheels because it seems based mostly on engine speed, rather than actual speed. I have ruled out the transmission because it occurs in more than one gear.

If anyone is familiar with this problem, or has any ideas of how to track it down, please let me know.
