Thanks for your comments Jim...It is strange that the scratching (very slight)and the stiffness seemed to develop almost overnight. My car only has a mere 101k and since summer is on its way out here in the southwest(todays temperature a brisk 99F)I dont think cold temperatures are an issue. What I am suspicious of is a failing rack. I am not sure exactly how these powersteering racks work in terms of assisting the steering but do you know if they have internal seals which can leak without any leaking externally?Additionally can worn ball joints have an effect on steering effort? thanks again JK
