Matt,
your mechanic is right, and he is not.
the way you shift will help the transmission, but it will not cure a design problem or faults during assembly.
well, the tranny does not really have a design problem, it just was designed along time ago for 100 HP and 170 Nm. with this initial setup it will last for good.
well, if there wasn't the other problem: ASSEMBLY!! assembly IMHO will determine the life span by at least 80%. if the preload on pinion and main (differential) bearings is not set properly in the factory you can do what ever you want, the trany will be shot within 75 kmiles.
I had a '90 tranny out of a 900 base version there the pinion was loud at 80 kmiles. disassembly showed, that everything inside was like brand new, but the pinion had a lot of play and was shot! only faulty assembly can be the reason.
I had a '87 SPG with 250 kmiles. this car was abused all the time (second owner) and there were no tranny problems.
cheers,
Uwe
