is one reason why starter problems are fewer with cars 85+
All that heat from the exhaust manifold caused starters to die faster. That's been a frequent aggravation with my 82 turbo. While there was something resembling a heat shield over my starter, I've installed additional insulation (stuff from under the hood in later year 900's) covering a larger part of the starter area. I've also recently cleaned all the contact points along the starter wiring chain and resoldered the solenoid wiring end fittings. I did that series of fixes after experiencing some starter probs with a rebuilt starter less than a year old. Of course it is the cold season here in CA, and since the problem occurs with a hot engine in hot weather, I won't really know if my efforts have paid off until April or so when the temps climb.
