Easiest way to pull off the test is mark the face of the pulley facing the FRONT of the car, which is in fact the back surface of the pulley. It's the easiest access for marking and checking later. Also, most cars '84 and later have two pulleys bolted to the balancer so marking them mistakenly would produce no result.
My front crank seal leaks badly. Parts for repair are on the way. When I do that job, I'm not even going to bother checking the balancer. I'm just going to have it rebuilt by a firm here in CA because mine is no longer available. The balancer has been oil soaked for awhile from all appearances. If it's not slipping now, it will be in about ten minutes.
These parts are prone to wearr out on SAABs due to their design. They've been a problem for over thirty years.
