I have the 4x10 to 6x9 adapters in my car. You don't have to cut particle board or the carpet around the old speakers at all. All the adapters are is a big piece of plastic. One side has a 4x10 opening and the other has a 6x9 opening. The adapters sit flush against the 4x10 opening and the 6x9s sit at an angle. It may sound odd but it is obvious if they are in front of you. The only thing you can cut (and it is optional) is the original opening for the 4x10s, they aren't really 4x10 so I opened them up with a dreml. No loss of cargo space to speak of. By the way I am running a set of rockford fosgate hpc 6x9s powered by an mtx amp. It sounds pretty good.
