So the mechanic calls and says it's a dead battery (nice!! an honest guy perhaps?)
He then says that the battery is 30 months old, but my notes indicate that it's 15 months old... i'll have to check the receipt when i pick up the car (if it's <18 months old the battery is supposed to be free replacement, otherwise pro-rated).
So he gives me the pro-rated price (which is fine, i could be wrong on the date purchased) but also says i'll owe him $30 to diagnose it and install the new one! Is this reasonable?!? It this is the case, I couldn't take advantage of the warranty without paying an add'l charge (as they certainly wouldn't just give me a new battery without testing it out)? I question him on the obvious Catch-22 and volunteer to install it myself. He says ok, just pay for the battery and no charge for the diagnosis and installation.
So now when i go to pick up the car, i need to double check my receipt as well as the date code on the battery (to see if he read it correctly) and if everything points towards a 15 month usage then i shouldn't be charged anything (but i'm sure he won't see it like that... perhaps he'll then reneg on his willingness to absorb the testing and installation). If the battery is indeed 30 months old, i'm willing to pay the pro-rated price no questions asked.
How far should i push forward or be willing to bend backward if the battery is indeed 15 months old?
Thanks for the advice as i know we're mostly a "fair" bunch... but just happen to know a *little* bit more about cars and can't be taken advanatage of as easily as the average person.
