Classic to NG?

Hey all,
As someone who's about ready to get into a "newer" Saab (say around a 96) from a classic '90 900, what's my best bet and what should I stay away from? The hard highway pounding my old '90 is getting is taking it's toll. I fear keeping it any longer is going to require more $$ in fixups than it's worth...
Thanks for any direction...
