So in the process of redoing my '88 SPG I've found some serious rust ... so serious that it ate a hole in the floorboard just left of the the shifter shaft, directly under the wire bundle. The hole is about 6" X 3", I think once done digging around and grinding the hole will probably grow to 8" X 5".
Until I can pay to have a part's car metal weld in what is the best interim fix? Should I leave it as it and just keep it free of water (not drive in the rain), or should I start to grind it down, paint it, and try to patch it? If so what paint and patch material should I use?
In other news I just replaced a bad cat. converter (w/ a death rattle) it had bluing in some spots and there was some brown fluid in it, perhaps smelled faintly like gas. Also the engine has a rough idle when cold (500-1100 rpm fluctuations) and then 800-1000 fluctuations when warm, under wide open throttle there is a hesistation (mechanic said felt like bad plug wires, yet all are within resistance specs). A headgasket also recently went on the car, so I'm confused now as to what killed the cat ... am I running way rich? Was oil and coolant leaking into the cat?
And the (HOPEFULLY) last of the gremlins is a clunk in reverse when the wheel is turned fully is one direction. This is an '88 so it doesn't have the old stlye front e-brake calipers, so what is going bad here? Are these the first signs of my CV joints?
Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated ... I'm praying these are the last of the gremlins, because they're really starting to erode my bank acount.
Thanks for reading!
