This isn't the reverse gear "lack of synchro" clunk. The real way to prevent that reverse gear clunk is to start from neutral, push the clutch in, select a forward gear (clutch still in), then select reverse (then release clutch to start moving). This prevents the reverse gear from scraping when engaging the reverse idler shaft.). I'm so used to this that it's second nature, and I never scrape reverse; I also never let NTB or JustTire employees back my car out of the bay (since they will always scrape that gear).
This clunk however is after the car is already in reverse. I'm guessing it's from a bearing wearing a groove in a race somewhere that it gets pushed out of when turning and going in reverse, either CV joint bearings or wheel bearings like DET said. On my '85 it was due to the front brake yokes moving around.
