Noise description sounds like tensioner pulley, but could be compressor. You can hear the pulley noise with a long screwdriver makeshift stethoscope touched to the pulley mount shaft. Be extremely careful with moving belts. If you are nervous about this approach, just loosen A/C belt and pop it off the pulley. If idler pulley is shot, you can feel the play by hand.

For AC rebuild, experts recommend a new expansion valve and it is mandatory to replace the receiver dryer, because the system has been exposed to the air. Sobstory has all this stuff and Jim will make sure you get the right parts and orings.

If you are diying, be very careful when you remove the hoses from the evaporator at the firewall. The pipes are soft copper and the support nut needs to be well supported with an extra wrench when you try to loosen the hose fittings. Have the wrench handles very close, so you can squeeze them together to crack the fitting without moving the pipe. If the wrench handles are 90 degees apart, it will be very hard to avoid twisting the copper pipe. Hose connections to receiver dryer also need to be well supported when tightening and it is easy to not fully tighten these fittings. You will feel a firm stop when they are snug. Finally, make sure there is enough oil in system when refilling. Bentley has exact quantity...7 ozs for emapty system if i remember.
