Gasket price...good grief. Can't you order parts from the UK? I know from websites that their prices are much better than what you are subjected to.
I would find the location of the leak, take the valve cover off and check that the valve cover is not distorted at the bad spot. If it's not flat, you might be able to tap it back into shape with a hammer and a piece of wood. Hylomar only seals if there is no air, so I would use some silicone RTV sealant at the bad spot. The reason that silicone is not recommended is because blobs of it can fall into the valve train lube system. But if you are careful not to use too much, I think it is OK and will seal up an air pocket. Make sure you clean the head and the channel of oil before applying sealant(Hylomar or RTV).
The other thing that might have happened is that the seal slipped out of the channel on installation. If this is the case just reinstall using only the Hylomar and be careful that the seal doesn't move...I guess that's obvious. Either way, you should be able to reuse the seal.
