Assuming you have a Bentley and will check out the bb for basic info here are a few tips.
-Go to a car wash with a diy pressure sprayer and squirt off the steering rack, thoroughly(keep spray away from AMM, dist, ign, etc.
-Flush system with fresh fluid to get crud out before you replace rack.
-you will need 16 and 18mm wrenches for the rack fluid fittings. stubbies are good but not essential.
-replace large hose that goes to bottom of pump at this time. It is a leaker when it gets hard as a rock from heat.
-If you don't have access to a rack, get the car up on tall and sturdy jackstands.
-tierod ends will pop out with a few sharp hammer blows on the spindle eye(not stud)
-remove large rack bolts before you remove ujoint and fluid connections so you can wiggle the rack around for clearance
-you need to turn the spindle all the way to one side to get tierod clearance, but this is explained in Bentley. It is good to have a helper to juggle the rack back and forth
-when you put new rack in, hook up the fluid pipes and then the spindle and then bolt the rack down. Especially for the pipe fittings, which are hard to get threaded when the rack is bolted down.
Probably a few more someone will think of. Did I say the job was dirty? You will swear that you will only do this once.
