Just because the #1 piston is at the top does not mean you are at TDC. I suspect you are at the top of the exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke(TDC). A 4 o'clock position on the rotor is about 180 off, which is consistent with the top of the exhaust stroke. Turn the flywheel another 360 and you will see the rotor in the correct position. You need to feel the compression in the spark hole at TDC. Then you can adjust the distributor and get the wires sorted out right.
I think that your distributor may be twisted out of position so that the EZK is screwed up and the car only runs with the wires is an oddball position.
