How curiously odd that you'd have only 5th gear. But then again, after taking a look at a picture breakdown of the internals of a SAAB 5 speed transmission, the selector shaft and fork that controls 1-4 gears is seperate from that which controls 5th gear. If something happened to the selector fork for 1-4, it is conceivable that 5th would survive. The 2 week prior vibration you mentioned suggests something other than a selector fork though. If, however, that 1-4 group of gears is on a shaft seperate from 5th, then it would make sense.
Re the inner driver and vibration you mentioned: vibration because of wear would have been increasingly gradual over a considerable time. A dry inner joint from a ruptured boot would have contributed to the wear, sure, but I don't see that happening in two weeks. I had to replace a damaged inner driver and tripod bearing not long ago when my lower right front A-frame bracket snapped and pulled the axle free from the inner driver. When I replaced the bracket, I didn't know it at the time, but one of the three bearing pods disintigrated. So for a week until I could get a replacement i.d and tripod bearing, I drove with a serious vibration during acceleration. I can only imagine what added strain to the tranny that vibration must have caused. It is possible vibration from a severely worn inner driver may have contributed to the problem in the tranny, so you still need to look at that.
