This can be done without removing the tranny. I've done this on my 89 SPG last year due to a bad vibration at high speed. And yes, the whole drive shaft assembly would have to come out. As I recalled, the circlip springs did gave me some trouble, but manageable. I got all my parts from http://www.gapa.com and they were fairly reasonable for Saab parts. The whole process took me about less then 4 hours, because when it comes to cleaning parts and inpect them I get very anal about it. Also, make sure your don't mixed up the shims when you removed the inner drive cup.
