you feel some resistance just let out the clutch slowly until it it gets pulled into rev gear. This will avoid the clunk by stopping the shaft from turning or some bearing or something. Also you can shut the car off and put it into rev when everything stops turning to avoid the clunk. I've been told that if this shaft is greased then it won't clunk but this happens on most C900 Saabs from all the posts I've read so just try the two above methods or putting it into another gear first.
Best, KB.
