Perhaps the "best" info we have - altho not scientific or conclusive - is the Townsend info.

Pre-89 pinion gear bearing(s) seem to be the greatest failure area. 89- doesn't seem to have agreement, but perhaps failure areas are spread out a bit.

Amsoil may be too thick for colder areas? And gearbox durability & shift ease as possibly two distinct items, as you state. Townsend says "acceptable shift quality", and I would also go for protecting the bearings.

Honda MTF seems to be a semi-synth? - don't know if the MSDS or whatever might show that. We should know in a few years ;-)

My main question was that it seems that most modern GL-4s and GL-5s now use inactive sulfur (vs the previous active sulfur), or non-reactive / deactivated active sulfur. Don't know chemistry well enuf to know if the last two mean the same thing? And it's generally stated that GL-5s have ~2X the EP protection vs GL-4

So wonder if Townsend's data is from the older style GLs, and/or it possibly may be some EP additive besides sulfur causing the post-drain failures.

MTL has a "non-reactive" sulfur, per Redline
