an aftermarket pre-pump shouldn't cost more than ~$45. replacing it yourself is pretty straightforward. where in bentley are you looking? should be in there - i just did the job a couple months ago...
anyway, do this:
remove neg battery terminal (u don't want sparks)
in trunk, unbolt and remove the felted wooden flooring -- two torx bolts only (don't lose the washers; they're special thick, countersunk jobs).
remove pump cover - big round bit w/rubber, driver side.
now, with flex-shaft driver, loosen clamp around black rubber plunger-looking thing through which the pump fits. there's a hole in car that'll allow passage to clamp screw.
gas smell will be strong. careful not to get any dirt etc. in tank. if area is dirty, may want to clean up a bit before removing pump.
remove fuel line & wiring. be careful not to damage the pump terminals when unbolting the fuel line - if you break 'em, you can't repair 'em.
remove the pump - you'll be pulling out the rubber thing, the pump and a plastic canister beneath all in one lump. on the side you'll see the pre-pump.
note that the pre-pump needs to be positioned on the RIGHT side of the canister as you look at it from the rear of the car; in other words, it should be on the inboard side. bentley manual, which uses saab diagram, has it backwards.
see if the return line is attached to canister. also see that your mechanic put the pump in properly. if he oriented w/pre-pump to outside, then he may have twisted the return line, pulled it off, & now you aren't getting enough fuel.
course, could also be the pre-pump is bad. i took mine off & put 12v to it. didn't move til i gave it a little thump. then tried a new one - spun like a, well, a new pre-pump.
when you take the pre-pump off, note which wire goes to which terminal. apparently, the original pre-pumps show + & - but aftermarkets don't have this marking. they do, however, have an arrow at the bottom - if you don't remember which terminal is which, give 12v for a second and see that the impeller is going w/the arrow.
once you have the pre-pump screwed to the canister & the wires re-fitted, put the pump back into the tank.
refit the fuel line & wiring, clamp up the plunger-looking thing...
check felt floor on the bottom - remove the two hooks and bend them back so flush with wood if they've pulled off a bit. then re-install the flooring.
