A bad inner drive could be part of the issue, but I doubt that fixing that will make it "tight". I don't really know where the play is coming from. I've had my car on jack stands and the majority seems to be internal to the transmission or possibly the drive chain. I am assuming the play is the additive clearances of the pinion and other gears, chain, etc. At 203,000 the gears can't be meshing as tight as they once did. (Everything between the clutch and wheels is orignial in my case.) A small amount of slack here and there through the drive train adds up.
