If you have a sawz-all, give it a try. I don't have one, which is why I used the angle grinder. I also use the grinder for grinding down welds, and with a wire wheel, it works great for cleaning off rust, paint, or undercoating. One from Harbor Freight might run about 25 bucks.
My SPG also had rust on one of the jack pads... I cut a replacement from the doner car and carefully welded it into place. The inside of the rails were repaired with thick sheetmetal bent to fit. Also look at the frame where the lower A-arm attaches...that's a common rust area.
